Runners, Your Shoes Make a Difference

They may not make you run faster or jump higher. Yet the material in the running shoe you wear does seem to make a difference. This study tested different shoes to shed some light on the mechanics of running.

When you run, your foot hits the ground with high impact. This study helps prove that the muscles of the leg adjust to this impact through a process called muscle tuning. Muscle tuning lessens the effects of impact on the tissues of the leg.

The midsole of running shoes also helps lessen the effects of impact. These researchers tested two different midsoles on six different runners. They found major differences in the muscle tuning between different shoes. And muscle tuning was significantly different between individual runners. Some runners did better with a hard midsole, while others benefitted from a softer one.

A better understanding of how our legs work when we run may help researchers find ways to treat or prevent conditions caused by the wear and tear of impact on the body. And who knows, maybe it will spur shoe companies to develop a "super shoe" that really makes us run faster.

GMAA Green Mountain Marathon
South Hero, VT
Since 1976, the Green Mountain Athletic Association has been identified with running in Vermont. GMAA members, about 400 strong, span all ages and abilities, from children through runners in their seventies, walkers to Olympic Trials qualifiers, all united in their enjoyment of the sport. GMAA means different things to each of its members, but it has always meant some of the same things to all of its members, including friendship, good health, competition, and good fun through running. GMAA sponsors a full slate of races, from 5K (several) through the marathon (Green Mountain Marathon), including the oldest continuously held race in Vermont (the Archie Post Five Miler), races specifically for women, and weekly track workouts. The club was one of the founders and is a continuing supporter of the Vermont City Marathon. In addition, GMAA and its members assist in the organization of many other races in Vermont, including a number of races to benefit charities. To support high school athletes, the GMAA offers small scholarships to help with the costs of attending college. Consider joining the Green Mountain Athletic Association. Your membership fee brings you a quarterly newsletter, information on race results, local retail discounts, discounted race entry fees, opportunities to improve your own running, an annual dinner/business meeting, and participation in an organization that benefits both the sport and broader community.
