Runners, Your Shoes Make a Difference

They may not make you run faster or jump higher. Yet the material in the running shoe you wear does seem to make a difference. This study tested different shoes to shed some light on the mechanics of running.

When you run, your foot hits the ground with high impact. This study helps prove that the muscles of the leg adjust to this impact through a process called muscle tuning. Muscle tuning lessens the effects of impact on the tissues of the leg.

The midsole of running shoes also helps lessen the effects of impact. These researchers tested two different midsoles on six different runners. They found major differences in the muscle tuning between different shoes. And muscle tuning was significantly different between individual runners. Some runners did better with a hard midsole, while others benefitted from a softer one.

A better understanding of how our legs work when we run may help researchers find ways to treat or prevent conditions caused by the wear and tear of impact on the body. And who knows, maybe it will spur shoe companies to develop a "super shoe" that really makes us run faster.

Grandma's Marathon

Grandma's Marathon was created in 1977 when a local running club called the North Shore Striders partnered with Grandma's Restaurant to plan and host a marathon along Highway 61-one of the most scenic courses in the world. What started as a small road race consisting of 150 runners has grown to be the 13th largest marathon in the United States.When Grandma's Marathon became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 1987, the 17-member board of directors, Executive Director, Scott Keenan, and staff of Grandma's Marathon, adopted the philosophy of reaching for the stars and never being satisfied with the status quo. This led to the addition of the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon in 1991 and the William A. Irvin 5K in 1997. Today, Grandma's Marathon weekend is one of the largest multi-race festivals in the nation. In fact, the 2010 races drew nearly 16,000 participants from all 50 states and 41 different countries, 50,000 race fans from across the globe, and 5,000 volunteers from the Twin Ports and surrounding areas.
Lake Wobegon Trail Marathon

The course is flat, fast, and picturesque. Many people feel that the trail from Holdingford to St. Joseph is the prettiest portion of the Lake Wobegon Trail. The trail is primarily rural except as it passes through the four small towns along the route. In a post on the"A Prairie Home Companion" website, Garrison Keillor said this about the Lake Wobegon Trail:"I've biked the bike trail-and love the ordinary beauty of farmland and meadow and the towns along it." The course is certified (USATF #MN-08042-RR).The Lake Wobegon Trail is a 10 foot wide asphalt bike trail on a former railroad track. The trail is smooth and has no cant. There is very little elevation change at any time along the entire length of the course. You cannot get lost on this course. Runners join the trail after one mile and then simply follow the trail to the finish. There is only one turn on the entire trail where the trail ‘T's' at about 11 ? miles and runners go left at the ‘T'.

They are on single track trail and traverse the front range of the Sawtooth Mountains through the Superior National Forest. The trail encompasses some of the most beautiful scenery in northern Minnesota. The National Forest Service and Backpacker Magazine have ranked the Superior Hiking Trail as one of the top hiking trails in the United States

The Marathon is a point-to-point run, starting at the Cramer Road (Cook County Road 1) trailhead on the Superior Hiking Trail, and finishing near Caribou Highlands Lodge in Lutsen. The Marathon course will include a short loop in the early part of the race in order to be full marathon distance. Runners will have access to three aid stations between the start and finish, and will never go more than 8 miles without an opportunity for aid. The Superior Hiking Trail Association (SHTA) publishes a wonderful series of trail maps, complete with descriptions, that cover in detail the sections of trail on which the Marathon will be run. Team Ortho Donation Campaign Helps Increase Polar Dash Contribution E-mailDonation Checks to Shriners HospitalOn January 1st, 2010, our beneficiary, Shriners Hospital for Children in Minneapolis, was the location for our winter race the Polar Dash 5K and 10K. The hospital was also the recipient of our donation during this race. Team Ortho Foundation was happy to donate $10,000 to Shriners. But above and beyond that, the organization received an additional $2,300 thanks to our Facebook friends. "We held a contest on Facebook during part of December. Team Ortho Foundation donated $5.00 for each new joiner to our Team Ortho Facebook Group until December 28th, it was a huge success," John Larson, executive director for Team Ortho Foundation said.In fact, one person was so moved by the Facebook campaign she offered to match the $5.00 per person donation for the final two day push, which helped bring the number to $2,300. Thank you to all of the people who participate in Team Ortho races and to the anonymous donor for her generosity. With your help all of this is possible!
Half Voyageur Trail Marathon

Welcome to the 29th annual Minnesota Voyageur Trail Ultra! The start, finish, and all race day festivities will be at the Carlton High School. Weather for Voyageur can be extreme. We've had several years when it was hot and humid, including 2003 when it was brutally hot with 90% humidity. Runners spent a lot of time lounging in the creeks along the Grand Portage and Gill Creek trails. 2001 was cool in the mid-50's and wet. Last year we had great conditions with a late race thunderstorm. You must plan for everything except snow, (at least not so far!!).

Minnesota's newest marathon! The Inaugural Mankato Marathon, presented by Hy-Vee, is Minnesota's final one of the year and the last chance for runners to qualify for the Boston Marathon. The weekend of Friday, October 22nd and Saturday, October 23rd is sure to be filled with fun for people (runners and non-runners) of all ages! The races on Saturday will feature a full marathon, a half-marathon, and a 10K. Runners will experience Mankato's beautiful Minnesota River, Red Jacket Trail and scenic bluffs. Runners need not worry though, as the course is looking to be a fast one and steep hills are not included! All races will start at Minnesota State University, Mankato campus and will wind through beautiful trails on the way down to the City Center where runners will pass through Sibley Park and finish in the heart of the City Center.
