Runners, Your Shoes Make a Difference

They may not make you run faster or jump higher. Yet the material in the running shoe you wear does seem to make a difference. This study tested different shoes to shed some light on the mechanics of running.

When you run, your foot hits the ground with high impact. This study helps prove that the muscles of the leg adjust to this impact through a process called muscle tuning. Muscle tuning lessens the effects of impact on the tissues of the leg.

The midsole of running shoes also helps lessen the effects of impact. These researchers tested two different midsoles on six different runners. They found major differences in the muscle tuning between different shoes. And muscle tuning was significantly different between individual runners. Some runners did better with a hard midsole, while others benefitted from a softer one.

A better understanding of how our legs work when we run may help researchers find ways to treat or prevent conditions caused by the wear and tear of impact on the body. And who knows, maybe it will spur shoe companies to develop a "super shoe" that really makes us run faster.

The Maui Oceanfront Marathon is community event benefiting local school teams, clubs, and Maui non profit groups that help put on the Marathon. The Maui Oceanfront Marathon Course: The start is just below the Wailea special event parking area on Wailea Iki Road. The course travels down Wailea Iki Rd to Wailea Alanui Drive (Shops at Wailea and Marriott Hotel) and then onto South Kihei Rd at mile 1, through oceanfront Kihei Town with a left turn onto Highway 30 at the 11 mile mark at Ma'alaea Bay and continues oceanfront all the way to Front Street at the South end of Old Lahaina Town. The last mile is through oceanfront residential and ends at oceanfront Kamehameha Iki Park adjacent to 505 Front Street. All of the course is on asphalt and the shoulder of the road. The shoulder is mostly between 4 and 6' wide. The course has many scenic pull outs and public beaches for family and friends to park, picnic and support your run. A great course to qualify for Boston. The course was measured and certified November 15, 2008 by Ron Pate. Certification Number is USA-2009-001-BDC

Marathon Course (26.2 miles)Our marathon course starts and finishes in Kalama Beach Park in Kihei, right on the ocean. Initially you head up to Piilani Hwy. and then north for around 4 miles to a turnaround point on the Piilani. At the turnaround point you head south back towards Kihei and past Kalama Beach Park. You continue on South Kihei Rd until around the 15 Mile mark. At Ahihi Bay you turnaround again and head north back to Kalama Beach Park for the finish.
