Runners, Your Shoes Make a Difference

They may not make you run faster or jump higher. Yet the material in the running shoe you wear does seem to make a difference. This study tested different shoes to shed some light on the mechanics of running.

When you run, your foot hits the ground with high impact. This study helps prove that the muscles of the leg adjust to this impact through a process called muscle tuning. Muscle tuning lessens the effects of impact on the tissues of the leg.

The midsole of running shoes also helps lessen the effects of impact. These researchers tested two different midsoles on six different runners. They found major differences in the muscle tuning between different shoes. And muscle tuning was significantly different between individual runners. Some runners did better with a hard midsole, while others benefitted from a softer one.

A better understanding of how our legs work when we run may help researchers find ways to treat or prevent conditions caused by the wear and tear of impact on the body. And who knows, maybe it will spur shoe companies to develop a "super shoe" that really makes us run faster.

The Olathe Kids Marathon was created to promote health and fitness in children. The marathon program is structured to allow children, kindergarten through sixth grade, to complete a full 26.2 mile marathon at a pace that is fun and safe for their growing bodies one mile at a time. The Greater Kansas City YMCA has developed a training program that will take the Kid's Marathon participant from zero to 26.2 total miles in 16 weeks. The first 25 miles will be, ran or walked in quarter, half or one mile increments, on a safe secure route designated by parents, coaches, mentors or teachers. The final 1.2 miles of the marathon will be completed on race day, Saturday, April 10, 2010. This year's event will be held at the Garmin facility at 151st and Ridgeview Streets with an age/grade wave start beginning at 7:30 AM. The Olathe YMCA is allowing children participating in the marathon and their families to use the YMCA for free on Sundays. While training, mileage tracking will be on the "honor" system and kids will get the most and be prepared for the marathon by tracking their miles honestly. Daily record keeping is a task that kids and parents can chart to monitor progress toward their mileage goals. A PDF version of the training program and tracking chart can be found on the Olathe Marathon's website www.olathemarathon.com under the "Kid's Marathon" button.

It is a 9 hour and 11 minute run/walk that begins at noon. Participants can be either solo or teams. You can join us at noon and stay the entire time or join us at any time during the event. You can run as much as you wish. Some people join us at the start, leave for a while and come back later.
