Runners, Your Shoes Make a Difference

They may not make you run faster or jump higher. Yet the material in the running shoe you wear does seem to make a difference. This study tested different shoes to shed some light on the mechanics of running.

When you run, your foot hits the ground with high impact. This study helps prove that the muscles of the leg adjust to this impact through a process called muscle tuning. Muscle tuning lessens the effects of impact on the tissues of the leg.

The midsole of running shoes also helps lessen the effects of impact. These researchers tested two different midsoles on six different runners. They found major differences in the muscle tuning between different shoes. And muscle tuning was significantly different between individual runners. Some runners did better with a hard midsole, while others benefitted from a softer one.

A better understanding of how our legs work when we run may help researchers find ways to treat or prevent conditions caused by the wear and tear of impact on the body. And who knows, maybe it will spur shoe companies to develop a "super shoe" that really makes us run faster.

Hamptons Marathon

The Hamptons Marathon & Half is the brainchild of two runners, Amanda Moszkowski and Diane Weinberger, who in 2004 were looking for a race in which to compete. During the summer of that year, while training for a fall marathon, they noticed that there were no races longer than a 10K distance on the East End of Long Island. With their typical can-do attitude, they decided that it was their job to fill that vacuum, and the Hamptons Marathon & Half was born. Overcoming the skepticism of many local runners, who thought that a Marathon in their area could not be done, the first race in 2007 registered a field of over 500 runners and was a great success, and has been followed each year with increasing (and always closed out) registration and attention at the local and national level. The race donates net proceeds to local charities, and to date has donated over $100,000 to the local after-school program, as well as to the local hospital. It is Amanda and Diane's firm commitment to their runners, as well as to their community, that has helped produce a manageably sized race of elite quality, and has made the Hamptons Marathon & Half a"Race To Run" in Runner's World Magazine.

In the late 1640's (about 20 years after Peter Minuit bought Manhattan Island), Adriaen Van der Donck received grant of land from the Dutch East India Company which he called Colon Donck (“Donck's Colony"), and built one of the first saw mills in the New World at the junction of the Hudson and Nepperhan Rivers. Van der Donck was referred to as Jonk Herr ("young Gentleman" or "young Nobleman") by reason of his status in Holland, and these words evolved through several changes to the Jonk Heer's land and The Younckers, The Yonkers and finally to the present Yonkers. The area acquired by Van der Donck passed into the hands of the Philipse family in the latter part of the 17th century, and Philipse Manor Hall was erected at this juncture of the two rivers in the early 1680s. Yonkers' strategic location fostered its development into a major trading center and its early settlers (including Native Americans, English and Dutch) created a diverse community.
